About Me

I’m Katie, I’m in my mid-twenties and I live in Edinburgh.

Originally from Northumberland I have lived in Scotland since 2009, in both Edinburgh and Inverness. I am interested in a lot of things, but I’d say my specific areas of ‘professional’ interest are Heritage Education, Youth Engagement and Scottish Prehistory (especially the Mesolithic)- however I can often ignite a passion for, and interest in, anything related to heritage, archaeology or the study of our past. I am always keen to meet new people with different areas of expertise and discuss new and innovative ideas. But it’s not all work, I’m trying to restore my work life balance, and I do enjoy other things too!

Other things I like:

  • katie chickenChickens– I have always wanted my own chickens, so much so that my Mum has given me books on how to raise chickens practically every Christmas since I was thirteen.
  • Parma Violets.
  • Baking cakes– especially trying new techniques with dairy-free and gluten-free ingredients, using seasonal fruits or making elaborate archaeology cakes.
  • Libraries and second-hand bookshops
  • Pretending to be a cat (I like sleeping and eating)
  • The beach– being brought up in Northumberland I was fortunate to be surrounded by one of the most beautiful coastlines, covered in sand dunes, scratchy grass and the occasional castle thrown in (no big deal).
  • Learning new things– I am always trying to attend talks, lectures and read books to learn new ideas or soak up people’s various passions and interests to make me feel more in touch with my own. The heritage sector is blessed with a diverse range of enthusiastic people, researching so many different interesting aspects of our past, it is hard not to get drawn into absorbing new information and learn more!
  • The Sims– my siblings and I coined the term Simge (Sims Binge)… you get the idea.
  • Wood burning stoves– I recently bought Country Living magazine for their ‘Heating Special: Stoves’ feature. I know what you want to say. Slow down! Don’t be so outrageous young one! and I know, i will try and dial down the crazy.

I also love Paul Simon much more than any average person, arguably to unhealthy levels- and I am in no rush to change this.
